Just had a week off to visit the homeland (Glasgow), where my dad has spent a week trying to convince my son (whos 15 months old) that he's a Rangers fan - He's not even mastered walking or talking yet, but cant be long before he says 'Rangers' in addition to 'Moo' and 'Look'.
Spent all week avoiding rain and playing golf - managing both poorly. Not touched a computer in over a week. Brilliant!:D

Cant they just be happy with 2nd??

Thought for the day?
Sureley its a bit of a cheek having horse riding as an olympic event, or if not, shouldnt the horse get the medal for doing all the work?

I think this horse feels the same way as me - click

Never done a blog before - mostly because I've not wanted anyone to confirm my suspicion that I do indeed talk rubbish almost 100% of the time.

Anyway - my thought for today....

I have a wee sideline in web design - I'm by no means an expert, but sort of know what I'm doing. Today I was contacted by a prospective client with a fencing business who gave me a link to a site and said 'I want a site like that please - can you give me a quote' It was nothing special, just wanted a few pages with contact details, pictures of previous work etc. I was mulling this over as I chatted to him when he told me one company had quoted him £2500. I was thinking £250. Am I missing something? Am I pricing myself way too low? Who are these people willing to pay thousands for a simple website and where do I find them? :)

I don't know how many mice I have bought over the years but its a pain in the ass trying to get one I like. I have had Microsoft, logitech, razer and saitek all of which were good or bad for some reason or another. The worst I have tried so far is the latest, the Razer Lachesis, it is a nightmare mouse with a mind of its own.

I have updated drivers, updated firmware and I have finally given up and went back to a logitech G5. Still deciding if is as good as my dead Microsoft Habu which I thought was an awesome mouse. Anyway rant over and my first post in the blog section :)

16-bit Support Missing in Wine

**THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN PARTIALLY SOLVED - SEE COMMENT BELOW**

Many old 16-bit applications no longer work running on Wine in Ubuntu 8.04. Basically changes have been made in the sysctl file to protect the first 64k of kernel memory to stop future attacks.

You can revert the change by using:

Code:

sudo sysctl -w vm.mmap_min_addr=0

This *might* allow 16bit apps to work, it might not, but it will stop the complaining. By running that command it temporarily resets the sysctl setting to allow Wine to work. At the next reboot, it will go back to the original setting. Changing it temporarily or permanently will not affect any other software, but it may make your system very slightly less secure.

How to Install/Upgrade Opera on Ubuntu

1. Download Opera deb file from Opera.
2. Remove old version using Synaptic . (Use remove not complete remove.)
3. Using Terminal:

sudo dpkg -i...

1. Download Opera deb file from Opera.
2. Remove old version using Synaptic . (Use remove not complete remove.)
3. Using Terminal:

sudo dpkg -i [name of Opera deb file.]

---------------------------------------------
SAVING YOUR CUSTOMISED SEARCH.INI

BEFORE running Opera copy your customised version of search.ini to :
/home/username/.opera
It is necessary to remove the default versions of search.ini from the Opera install so that they do not write into your custom search.ini file. So delete these files :

/usr/share/opera/locale/en/search.ini
/usr/share/opera/search.ini

If you are running the international version you will also need to delete the search.ini file provided for your locale. For instance if you are using United Kingdom English you will need to delete this file:

/usr/share/opera/locale/en-GB/search.ini

Now run Opera and your searches will be the way you want! Unfortunately, you will need to do this everytime you upgrade Opera.
--------------
TO IMPROVE POOR FONTS ON SOME WEBSITES(such as theregister.co.uk) the following line is added to Opera6.ini under [User Prefs] :
Enable Core X Fonts=0
